Birkdale Manufacturing – located on Queensway Industrial Estate in Scunthorpe - applied for the funding from the £8m Growing the Humber Business Investment Grant to support their expansion project.

The funding is part of the Government’s Local Growth Fund, secured by the Humber LEP and part of the Government’s commitment to the Northern Powerhouse.

Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said:

“It is fantastic news that Birkdale has been successful in receiving a £400,000 Government grant to support their expansion plans. It shows their commitment to North Lincolnshire and their confidence in the area to develop their business. It is extremely positive to see businesses like Birkdale expanding and creating new jobs.”

Birkdale is staying on Queensway Industrial Estate but moving to a larger warehouse.

The new 42,000 sq ft premises, being leased from the council on a lease purchase agreement, will allow them to develop and create around 30 new jobs.

The new building has a purpose-built warehouse and distribution facility along with internal office and staff facilities facing Brigg Road, Scunthorpe.

The funding will be used to buy equipment for the new premises.

Simon Sturman, owner of Birkdale, said:

“In the last few years Birkdale has invested heavily in new machinery, which allowed us to increase our capacity to cope with extra demand. This, however, created workspace issues so to cope with growth, further investment and larger floor space was required.

“With the help of North Lincolnshire Council’s business development team we’ve been able to find premises and secure grant money, which added to our own £1.4m of investment allowing us to bring forward our expansion plans.

“Birkdale continue to grow on the back of manufacturing high quality products and our company brand is now well and truly established nationwide. Now with further reinvested profits, we can continue our expansion. We are excited by the future outlook and we certainly have further expansion plans moving forward.

“The new machinery means we are the only UK manufacturer of garage doors that do not need to import panels from mainland Europe. With the current Brexit situation this gives us greater control of our business moving forward allowing us to increase our market share in the UK and to increase our overseas business.”

Birkdale – a well-established, UK-based manufacturer - specialises in garage doors and roller shutters, composite doors, awnings, pergolas, patio enclosures, window blinds and more.

Cllr Neil Poole, cabinet member for prosperity at North Lincolnshire Council, added:

“Birkdale are clearly a business that is growing at a pace and are employing a number of local people. We have now purchased their new premises and we will lease it to them on commercial terms.

"The acquisition will then help us to generate a financial return that we can re-invest in our services that support our most vulnerable residents.

“Supporting businesses in North Lincolnshire is a key priority for the council and we will continue to support investment in the area. We are always on the lookout for businesses to invest in North Lincolnshire, whether that is current businesses expanding, start-ups or a moving to the area.”
